Here are 10 tips when you're hand expressing milk:

Tip 1

Milk production is hard without intake of water. Increasing your intake will help to increase milk production. You may become thirsty or hungry during expressing. You should fulfil these needs to increase efficiency.

Tip 2

It is better to express milk early in the morning, or after a bath or shower. This encourages a good let down which moves milk from your milk ducts into the nipple where the breast pump can draw the milk out. To increase milk production, regular expressing should be conducted throughout the day and night.

Tip 3

When expressing throughout the day, try to do it routinely. For example at 9 am, 3pm and 9pm again. You can also express your breast milk in accordance with your baby's feeding schedule, that is, every two to three hours. If you choose to express once a day, express during early mornings as milk supply is at its optimum. Expressing from one breast while nursing the baby on the other, stimulates let down and increases efficiency of expressing. You can also express after feeding your baby.

Tip 4

Place a warm cloth on the breasts. Before expressing, one at a time, remove the cloth from the breast and rub down the breast softly. Lumps or sore areas should be carefully manipulated. When you feel ready to express, take the cloth off, reheat it and place it on the other. When double expressing, place warm cloths on each of your breast, wait five minutes, then massage them both at the same time.

While expressing, focus on other things rather than the task at hand. This can cause an increase in expressed milk as it reduces the stress you would put on yourself to obtain a greater yield of milk.

Tip 6

Two piece outfits should be worn while expressing. This allows an ease in access to the breasts with the pumps. Leaning forward will avoid milk from dripping on your clothes.

Tip 7

If you are expressing milk in order to store it for future use, milk should be expressed directly into freezer bags or transferred immediately to freezer bags from the bottles. After expressing, the freezer bags should be placed in the freezer as soon as possible. Label the date and amount expressed and uses the oldest milk from your frozen stock first to make sure that the milk does not go out of date. Each quantity stored should be no more than four ounces to prevent waste. But as the baby gets older the volume can be changed according to their requirements.

Tip 8

Damaged nipples due to breastfeeding can be helped or hindered by expressing. Feeding from the nipple by the baby can be more painful during healing, while expressing can provide a more comfortable way for the healing process as the intensity can be adjusted.
