Who says bird watching is boring? It's not! What's more, you don't have to be a geek, a conservationist, or a science nut to appreciate how different birds look, sound, and behave.
Birds are everywhere around us. They nest and roost on our buildings, they feed in our gardens, and they refuse our dumps. They're easy to spot, and fun to observe. Here are some interesting bird facts to prove that point.
1. Vampire Finches are not called vampires for nothing.
They drink other birds' blood... and that of their dead! Researchers say this behavior came from the bird's practice of eating the parasitic insects found in bird plumage.
2. Vultures can fly for hours without flapping their wings.
That's right! Not one flap, not one beat - and this skill helps make them such an efficient scavenger.
3. A hawk has amazing vision.
In fact, the hawk's vision is so sharp it can spot a mouse from a mile above!
4. The Peregrine Falcon is the world's fastest bird.
Do you know its speed exceeds 200 miles an hour? That's definitely more than your own speeding limit!
5. A mother hen turns eggs roughly 50 times in one day.
There's a reason for this - if she doesn't, the yolk will stick to the shell! Mothers truly know best!
6. A chicken's earlobes will tell you the kind of egg it can product.
If the earlobe is red, expect brown eggs. If the earlobe is white, expect white eggs.
7. A turkey can suffer a heart attack.
Laugh all you want but it's been said that while the U.S Air Force did test runs to break the barrier of sound, the turkeys who were loitering nearby suffered heart attacks... and died.
