What the **** is wrong with my parrot?
My family is coming down for the weekend and I'm really wary about my parrot's behavior toward them. They are obviously excited to see the parrot because it was a gift for me a couple years back and they haven't seen him in a while.
He's always shouting obscenities 24/7 like..
"Polly want a *****ing cracker"
"Shove it up your ***** you stupid *****ing *****"
"Lick my **** you piece of *****"
Honest to god, I don't even remember saying this stuff around him.. but I always left the TV on for him to watch and I can't imagine any of that was on there. It was on Discovery channel mostly.
It doesn't matter where he picked up, and he can't just forget them. However, he can be encouraged NOT to say those words
I've only had to do this once, and it worked pretty well. When he shouts and obscenity, don't laugh, don't smile, and don't give him ANY impression that you like him doing that. Just look straight at him and tell him "No" in a stern voice. But don't yell.
Encourage the good things that he says by expressing how happy you are when he says them, and reward him with treats when he's just sitting quietly. He'll learn that he has something to gain by behaving well that way. Also, you might try teaching him words that rhyme with the words that you don't like.
Beyond that, make sure all of his needs are being met. He'll be quieter if he's kept properly. Make sure he's got a large cage, plenty of toys, a healthy diet of pellets and bird friendly fresh foods, and plenty of time outside the cage to socialize.
