For families or individuals who have been contemplating on buying a parrot and raising it as a pet, it should be known that serious time, effort and money goes into proper parrot care. You don't just go to the pet store, buy a cage and a bag of seeds and put Polly in a corner of your home and leave him there- talking to him only when you feel like it. Careful thought and planning should be done before finally deciding to take your baby parrot home.
In the wild, parrots socialize with each other and crave the company of their flock. If you decide to adopt just one (as in the case of the bigger varieties), make sure Polly will be exposed to lots of people because he will surely get lonely without a companion in the cage. Parrots form behavioral problems when they get depressed and stressed-out, common symptoms are feather-plucking, constant screeching and lack of appetite. If you live by yourself and don't have anyone to keep the bird company, forget about buying a Macaw, Amazon, or one of the larger varieties. It's a better idea to start with a group of parakeets or lovebirds first as they will be perfectly happy with each others company while you're at work.
It's also not a good idea to adopt one of the larger breeds if you live in an apartment or a condo with your neighbors in the next room. Parrots are noisy creatures- it's their nature. Make sure you have a big enough place and are quite a distance from your neighbor to avoid complaints.
If you are a parent of small children, remember that parrots and small children do not mix. Without proper supervision, serious harm can happen to the parrot or your kid. Certain breeds like the Conure don't take to well to the presence of children. If you have kids at home, be sure you or another adult is around if they want to get close to the parrot.
Yes, parrot care can be challenging at times, but when done correctly it will bring you and your household a lifetime of fun and memories.
