For best results it is essential that you know how to adjust your bench plane, and this applies to all your woodworking hand tools. In this article I am going to take you through the honing procedure, and I must stress the importance of safety when dealing with plane blades. The first thing we need to do is to make sure the plane is true. We need to check the flatness of the sole against the edge of a true surface (such as a ruler), a slight concave sole is quite acceptable but never convex. You can use a combination square to check that the plane is square.

To remove the blade lift up the handle of the lever cap, you may need to give it a little help with a screwdriver if the cap is a bit stubborn, make sure it's the right screwdriver for the job. Take the lever cap from the plane and you will reveal the blade assembly. Next unscrew the chipbreaker which you will find sitting on top of the blade, you can the carefully lift the blade off the frog, making sure to keep your hands away from the blade edge. Undue the screw and release the chipbreaker from the blade.

You will need a diamond whetstone (1,000 grit) set in a stone holder. You need to secure this to the workbench and lubricate this with a propriety lapping fluid (this is petroleum based). Begin by flattening the back of the back of the blade, rub the blade flat side down across the whetstone. You will need an honing guide and you set the angle, which is used to keep the flatness of the bevel edge consistent while sharpening. This normally about 30 degrees for planes.

You need to set the width of the honing guide to the same width as the blade itself, insert the blade and make sure it's secure. Place this assembly on the whetstone and starting with a backstroke hone the blade by moving it back and forth along the whetstone, try to maintain a an even pressure. Again rub the flat-side to remove any burr that's forming and continue until there is a secondary bevel of 1 to 2mm formed along the full width of the blade.

You now change to a 4000 to 6000 grit waterstone, lubricate with water and repeat the steps for honing. To get a really good mirror finish repeat the procedure with an 8,000 grit waterstone and finish off on the flat side to remove any burr.
