Modern GRP Composite doors have been designed from the drawing board to last longer than their two main counterparts the traditional wooden door and the more modern panel UPVC door but still wanted to give the aesthetic curb side appeal of a traditional wooden door.
Home owners are therefore faced with an un ending array of colours shapes designs and innovative glass works which all give the GRP Composite door its well deserved appeal and seemingly market lead in replacement doors.
A question many new prospective composite door purchasers really want to know is a simple one: What is the difference between a butt hinge and the more modern flag hinge?
The Butt Hinge.
The modern butt hinge from its first days ventured into the modern double glazing market aesthetically was designed to mirror the view of a traditional set of hinges, every day hinges that you might find on any wooden door from the early parts of the17th century right up to present day.
A simple replication of what everybody would agree and recognise a hinge should like,The hinge has worked well for many decades on wooden doors where a joiner would fit the frame cut the butt hinges out of the outer frame and the actual door itself, then with high levels of skill hang the door and plane it down until the door fitted approximately. Then making further adjustments depending on what the door needed for it to hang true, with such common techniques of sometimes packing a hinge or shaving a small amount off the door until the door hung well and closed correctly.
The modern composite GRP Door however has its hinges recessed by anyone as they are factory fitted, nor is it ever heard of to pack butt hinges in the modern composite. As to using a plain to adjust its seating again unheard of as all modern composites are plastic.
So how does a fitter adjust the door? BANG! That's the main down fall of butt hinges there is no adjustment with most modern butt hinges giving only 3mm of adjustment in one plain (usually up and down) if the frame isn't absolutely square plumb and level, to cut a long story short the fitter is in trouble!
Flag Hinges.
Flag hinges as the name suggests are larger hinges which do not aesthetically look like traditional hinges. With modern materials however and forward thinking design, it could be said some flag hinges now look better than butt hinges but this is a matter of personal opinion.
The flag hinges of today found their roots in the late 70s and early 80s where the modern panel upvc door needed a reliable hinge which could move in more than one plain or direction. The flag hinge is undoubtedly far more fitter friendly, it gives so much more movement to the hinges which in turn move the sash( the opening part of the door) to give the ability to toe and heel a door.
Put simply the hinge can be moved up or down left or right which any experienced fitter greatly appreciates for ease of adjustment and setting the door up correctly so the door locks and latches well.
The other factor speaking with some years experience of fitting doors is reliability once the flag hinge is set normally within a week of installment giving a short period for settlement the door can be forgotten about as the hinges will not move 1mm. They are and always have been the backbone of any quality door installation within the double glazing industry.
Some companies charge an extra £10 for fitting flag hinges taking a consumer or homeowners viewpoint this could well be the best £10.00 spent on extras relating to their new composite door.
