My new bird is terrified and very untamed?

I am willing to work with this bird, we just got it today. We got it for $50 dollars, and it was originally $400 than they marked it down to $100. The people they bought it from lied about her age, and tameness. I purchased it from a Earl May store. They also gave me 30 days if something were to happen.

Anyway it had a mate, and they separated it, and than the male mate died.

This bird is absolutely terrified, have to wear gloves because it bites hard and hisses when you handle it.

She is a Meyer Parrot.

What can i do to tame it? It is about 5 years old and need any advice and tips i can get.

Hey there,

Don't return it. That bird is probably going to be the most loyal creature ever if you can overcome its fear of you. Also it's aggressiveness. You can tame if you try your best I'm sure. If I could get my parrot to not be scared by my presence, you could do it to. Using gloves is not going to work, so you need that gone. You need to go through those painful bites, and NOT react or else it's going to be like "Ohh it's scared of me when I bite, let me bite it more...BITE BITE BITE". What you need to do it get treats for it, and get a non toxic stick. I use a chopstick. Here's the trick to taming it you place the chopstick inside the cage about a few inches away from its face and out of curiosity it nips it, you have to make a clicking noise with your mouth which is what I do, but you can buy clickers at the dog section in petco. Anyways after you make the clicking noise You give it a treat. You work like this continuously with your parrot until it realizes when it touches the stick , you reward it by giving it treats. Slowly you can be able to put your hand inside its cage and giving it treats from your hand. Remember you have to gain your bird's trust and make a bond with it/

If your bird goes crazy, when your outside its cage. Then here's a trick, you go near it's cage and let it go crazy all it wants and when it calms down you turn around, and that is showing the bird when you go near its cage and stay there and it calms down, your treating it by turning around. You do it for a long time, coming closer each time until your parrot understands your not going to hurt him. Later on, when it's tamed you could teach it tricks. And you will see how loyal your parrot it. By the way, hand taming your bird may vary on your parrot itself but it could take somewhere from 2-6 months. But patience is rewarding. Take care of your baby. Parrots are smart animals. They're not like dogs or cats, it takes time to gain their trust and when it's done. It's simply the best.
