where i live theres a lot of wild birds and especially the every growing population of some sort of domesticated green parrots or finches... when my bread or bagels go stale i decided to give them to the birds which they seem to enjoy...so i been doing this a lot lately cause i like being a nice guy. but my question is, feeding stale bread and bagels bad for wild birds? are there any home foods that i can feed to birds when they expire or should i just buy a bag of bird seeds?
Old bread products may not be the most proper or nutritious food for outside birds but it won't hurt them. Seed is a better choice. But even feeding seed has it's pitfalls (imho). The cheap bags of mixed wild bird seed that are commonly sold in most places are filled w many things that wild birds wont eat (not even hungry birds). So you end up w quite a bit of waste for your money. The seed will spoil on the ground or in feeder, getting moldy so if a bird does try to eat it they can become ill/die. In no way am I trying to discourage backyard bird feeding. Fun, relaxing activity---I've been doing it all my life. Best seed for feeding birds is considered to be the black oil sunflower (bos). It's skinny, black, w no stripes like other sunflower seeds. Most hardware stores & pet stores sell it, I get mine from a farm/feed store. I use bos, cracked corn, suet cakes.
If you don't want to deal w feeding but still want to attract birds, get a bird bath. When I was a busy worker w 2 or 3 jobs, I always had a bird bath but didn't bother w seed (no time). Always had many species in the yard for drinking & bathing.
