I want a bird.?
I have always wanted a big bird, like a parrot, macaw, mynas, or a crow. I was wondering what my best kind would be. I really want to be able to train it to talk and all that fun stuff, but I do not want one that will bite me because the first time it does, I probably won't touch it again. I have that problem with animals, once they hurt me I dont trust them. I am also wondering where a good place would be to get one (where they take care of the animals). My friends had one and it was as mean as could be. Also some tips about food/cost/cages/toys, etc would be great. Also how easy are they to train. How intelligent are they?
Okay, first thing, some of the reasons you want a bird worry me.
1. Not all birds talk. If that is the reason you want one, then get another pet. Even birds notorious for talking don't always talk.
2. All birds bite. Even friendly ones will bite. If you will punish the bird for doing something in it's nature, don't get one. Birds use their beak like an extra hand or like a small child when teething. EVERYTHING goes in the mouth. All of my birds have bitten me, either out of frustration, fear in the beginning, or when they get tired or upset. It is a part of bird owning.
3. Big birds are a LIFETIME commitment. Macaws live for over 100 years. Crows are illegal to own in many places being a wild bird, and mynas take a VERY special diet.
4. Cages for even small birds will run over several hundred dollars. Large parrot cages will run thousands of dollars. Then you need toys that they will turn into toothpicks, food that they may not eat all of but needs to be replaced fresh every day, twice a day, vetrinary costs which can be several hundred to several thousand at once, and taking care of all fresh food costs. They need fresh food daily, it also needs removed after a few hours. If they need a vet, you have to find one that will see them asap, making a bird wait is deadly.
You need to commit to never going far on vacation without the bird and giving the bird a lifetime home. If you think that you may be ready after all that and have the extra money laying around, please visit my site for more info.
