This past year, we moved twice. The first time, I didn't pack much of anything, other than a suitcase, sort of... The phone call came as I was washing up clothes from the last trip, after driving four hours to get home, so I could pack up to go back. I threw clothes out of the washer and the drier in bags and into the suitcases and we launched the next four hours on the road. My daughter was in the hospital when we arrived, but the baby didn't arrive for another month. My clothes got dried in her drier, after I got her home from the hospital.
I camped out on her couch until the baby was born. Then another two months until her sister's baby was born. Then... we finally moved into our new Condo a few weeks later. My Mom came to stay with me for a few days that turned out to be for the rest of her life. She was here for just over two months.
2010 arrived on a hurricane of activities and disappeared into a blur of incredibly wonderful memories, unbelievably sad memories and a mass of unpacked boxes, still stacked in every conceivable corner of my residence. Most of the boxes aren't mine, but they have a mixture of contents, including toys belonging to two toddler residents of my new home.
Sorting out the vast variety of contents from each box may actually have been my saving grace this past month. Amid the tears of finding Mom's house slippers, there was laughter at finding my grandson's long lost Binkie. (He no longer uses one, but it's been found.)
So, the E-Z steps to declutter:
With boxes set out of the way, decide first how you want to set up each room, and hopefully start with a clean slate in at least three rooms. We chose bedrooms. Clean floor to ceiling, vacuum, make beds, hang curtains and arrange furniture.
As you sort boxes, put everything away that can be put away, rebox things that can't be put away and label them according to ROOM. Stash those boxes in the room for which they are labeled and move on to the next boxes.
By decluttering your space, your life becomes less cluttered. Now tackle the time issue that's preventing you from living a life of peace and continuity. Sort your life events in the same manner as the boxes, and eliminate any thing that isn't moving you in the direction of your heart. Arrange those things you keep in your life in their compartments and label them with love and acceptance.
Step back and admire your handiwork as completion comes. Remember to take a few breathers along the way and enjoy your life. It all comes to a screeching halt, way too soon!
