Can someone please answer these 4 questions? Put up a new bird feeder?
1) The bird feeder will be put on top of a vertical 4" by 4" post. The residents want the post to be 2.5 metres high. To make the post sturdy, you must bury it at least 0.5 metres. If a 4" x 4" post costs $1.79 a foot, how much will the post cost?
2) Once the post is buried, you need added support. You attach wires 1.5 metres up from the base of the post on either side. The wires are 1 metre from the base. Wire costs $1.25 a foot. How many feet of wire will you need and how much will it cost?
3) The bird feeder will hold 1.5 L of bird seed. How many pints will it hold?
4) A bolt is needed to attach the feeder to the post. At least 1/2 inch of the screw must penetrate the wood to be secure. You also need to put a 1/8 inch washer in between the screw and the wood. The screw must go through a 1 inch board, the washer, and penetrate the wood. Determine the minimum length of screw required if the screw type is sold in 1/4 inch increments.
Post extends out of ground 2.5 metres, and you must have 0.5 metres buried. So you must buy a 3 metre post. Convert metres to feet (1 metre is 3.28 ft), then multiply by the price per foot.
Use the Pythagorean theorem to calculate the wire length: your triangle sides are 1 and 1.5, so the length of the hypotenuse is. . .? Then multiply that by 2 (because you need two wires), and multiply that by the price per foot.
A liter is 2.11 pints.
You might want to draw a diagram to help you picture this. The bolt must pass through the 1 inch board and the 1/8 inch washer and extend out at least 1/2 inch. That's a total of 1 and 5/8 inches, but you will have to buy a bolt that is longer, 1 and 3/4 inches (1 and 6/8).
