When it comes to setting up cages for finches, there are many different ways that you can go about it. Birds are essentially winged creatures, meaning they are born to fly. Since you are planning to keep finches as pets, you should at least give them a cage large enough for them to fly and move around.
Protection from Extreme Temperatures
Finches are quite sensitive to heat, and it is important that you avoid exposing them to over 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Transporting the birds to a buyer or from a pet shop can be detrimental to their health. If you are taking the bird's home using a pick-up truck, make sure that they do not get in contact with overheated cargo bed that gets direct exposure to sunlight. You may want to consider welded mesh as cages for finches when transporting the birds quite often. The birds must also have constant supply of food and water. Secure the cage so that it does not wobble heavily and compromise the safety of your birds.
During wintertime, the cages for finches must have protection against the chilling wind that can freeze the birds to death. You can use towel to cover the cage and provide warmth to your pets. If you are traveling short distances, you can use paper sacks taped around the cage. But make sure that they are not kept in the dark for long hours as this can disorient the birds.
Choosing the Cage
The rule of the thumb is: the bigger, the better. The cages should serve as a healthy sanctuary where they can fly about without difficulty. Welded wire is preferable because it is quite sturdy and can support several cages that are stacked on top of each other. Vertical cages for finches are better than horizontal ones because they allow the birds to fly up and down. Avoid putting flat perches because the finches can have difficulty sitting on them. Natural wood is the best kind of perch, with a diameter of about 5/8 inch. Put several perches inside the cage so that the birds can rest on them when needed.
When setting the cage, design a two-inch lip up on the sides that would catch seed hulls falling out. You can place the cage in a cardboard box that is firmly glued to the bottom. Cages for finches should have a water bath where the birds can dip into when they're feeling hot and greasy. Make sure that the water bath does not easily trip over. If the cage is set up properly, you will only have to clean it once a month.
Nesting is an essential part of cages for finches, especially if it's the season for breeding. There is variety of materials that you can use for putting up a nest. You can use cardboard boxes glued together to resemble a circular nest. Put vertical sides around it so that the hatchlings won't fall over accidentally. The most common material is burlap sacking, which you can just allow the birds to tear off the strands and assemble it themselves. Dry pine needles also make an excellent nesting as opposed to grass, which are most often overlooked by birds.
