Pet birds are very beloved pets for many of us. Keeping the cage and cage area clean can be challenging. However, if you keep the cages clean and not allow them to get very dirty, a clean cage is easy to keep up.
I, personally own seven birds and spend about 10 minutes per day cleaning the cages, one twenty-minute session every week and then one longer session every few weeks for a thorough steaming and cleaning of the cages.
Where does the mess come from?
Much of the mess in and around the cage comes from food. There are also droppings and feathers to contend with. Remove any moist foods from the cage as soon as the bird finishes eating. Moist foods attract insects and bacteria so removal is needed.
Wipe down the grate on the bottom or cage, all perches and exteriors of feeding dishes with a damp cloth at least once a day. It takes only about one minute to wipe down the surfaces if you do not allow the gunk to accumulate and dry rock hard.
Place several layers of newspaper, with each sheet folded to fit the cage and layer the papers one on top of the other. This makes is a simple matter to remove the soiled paper daily while already having a clean sheet in place.
During cleaning time it is easy to move the perches and toys around to offer variety and interest to your birds day. Give the cage a good scrubbing once a month or so with an avian safe disinfectant while your birds are walking around the house, or in the case of very small birds are in another cage during cleaning.
A major part of maintaining a clean birdcage and cage area is prevention of the mess in the first place. There are many barriers available to put around the bottom bars of the cage. Using these guards save many hours of cleaning because they cut the mess. There are a number of specialty products to put around the cage, but there are also ways to carry out the job without spending a lot of money.
Some suggestions include measuring the cage and having some Plexiglas cut to the dimensions needed and attach to the cage. Use vinyl window screening with a cloth edge (bias tape) sewn around the edges and attach to the lower one-third of the cage or using fine holed plastic canvas cut to fit and then attached to the cage, these items keep the mess inside the cage.
For the area around the cage use an easy to clean hard surface such as floor protectors or plastic covered tabletops. I keep a small broom and dustpan in a drawer near the cage. A battery operated, hand-held vacuum also does a great job. The more often you spend a few minutes tidying the area up the fewer times you will have to spend hours cleaning a very messy and smelly area.
In summary, keep your bird's cage and cage area clean by spending a few minutes every day or even twice a day to keep the area neat and free from debris. As needed do more intensive cleaning and you will be find that you are able to spend more time interacting with your bird than cleaning up after him.
