One of the largest breeds of miniature macaw, the Severe Macaw is friendly and playful. Arguably the best talker in the macaw family, the Severe is sure to provide its family with lots of joy and entertainment.
Habitat and Characteristics
The Severe Macaw, also known as the Chestnut-Fronted Macaw, is native to Northern South America. The breed is primarily found from Panama to northern Bolivia. The breed is not endangered, so they may be captured for trade. For this reason, Severe Macaws are easy to find in pet stores and from breeders.
Severe Macaws are green in color, with some red and blue outlining their wings. They have a patch of brown above their black beaks, with bare patches of white on their faces. These patches have lines of small black feathers. These birds have an average length of 16 to 22 inches.
The Severe Macaw can live for 30 years or longer. Some are reported to have lived up to 80 years, but this is not particularly common. Proper care will result in a longer life span.
The Severe Macaw's Personality
Severe Macaws are known for being sociable birds. They enjoy the company of people and of other birds. They often become attached to one person, but if properly socialized while young they can learn to get along with the whole family and visitors as well.
Severe Macaws love to play with other Severes, so if you can keep a pair of them they will entertain each other. Because of their highly social nature, they will still take great pleasure in playing with their human companions.
Like most macaws, the Severe is a very vocal bird. They may develop squawking problems if not properly socialized or trained. But they are also known for being great talkers, and can be taught to speak instead of making less desirable noises.
The Severe Macaw has lots of energy and is quite curious. It needs plenty of time out of its cage. Your bird can spend many hours out of his cage each day if he has a perch. With proper training, a Severe Macaw is usually reasonably well behaved.
Training the Severe Macaw is a very intelligent bird. It is easy to train, can learn lots of tricks, and loves to entertain. This bird needs plenty of toys that provide both mental and physical challenges. It needs things to stimulate its mind and burn energy so that it will not get bored and become destructive.
Care and Feeding
The Severe Macaw needs fresh water and a nutritious diet. Organic pellets are best, and they should be supplemented with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Nuts and seeds should be used as treats only.
A Severe Macaw's small size means that it can thrive in a smaller cage than most macaws, but it still needs enough room to spread its wings and play. A parrot cage may be sufficient, but your bird will need plenty of time outside of it.
