You've bought your parrot cage and put your parrot inside but have you had a close look at the perches that came with your cage? Are they really suitable for your bird? Do you know how to decide whether your perches are in fact suitable perches for your bird?
This article is going to show you what to look for in a perch so that you can make sure your parrot has the best perch possible so that he doesn't fall off it!
Most cages come with factory produced dowel perches. These perches are wooden, a constant diameter and texture and go straight across the width of the cage. These are not particularly good for your parrot. Some of these dowel type perches come with sandpaper fixed to them or, if not, some bird owners fix the sandpaper to the dowels themselves. The idea being this will help to keep your birds claws trimmed as well as giving them something to grip on to but in fact perches like this damage your parrot's feet.
You should fit different size, diameter and length, natural perches in the cage. This enables your bird to exercise his feet. Natural perches are simply perches you have cut from a tree. Mine come from the fruit trees in my garden and get changed often. Your bird will enjoy natural perches because they can be stripped and chewed allowing your parrot to exercise not just his feet but his beak as well.
Should you have an older bird who may not have the strength to climb up to high perches it would be a good idea to fix the perches closer to the floor of the cage and perhaps put some soft padding underneath them just in case your bird does indeed fall off his perch.
