For optimum electricity generation, solar paneling must allow sunlight to pass from the air and into it with the minimum amount of reflection. This is an obvious point, but it basically means that the material from which the solar panel is made of (glass) must be as transparent as possible in order to be as effective as possible to produce electricity.
Since all solar panels are exposed to the elements of nature, like rain, snow, hail, etc, it is therefore essential that they are kept perfectly clean if they are to function at maximum efficiency.
Dirt and grime alone will bring down the efficiency of solar paneling by at least 5 per cent, which means a drop in electricity output and a possible shortage of electric power for the home, depending of course on what the solar power is actually being used for.
There are many causes of reducing the efficiency of solar paneling; described here are 5 of them:
- Hailstones: Throughout the year it is common for rain to turn into the kind of hail that sticks to cool or cold surfaces. If such ice persists for any length of time it will certainly prevent quality sunlight from passing through it. If the ice is stuck to panels then it will severely impact on the amount of electricity that can be generated.
- Frost: As everyone knows, frost is ice, and like hailstones it will limit the amount of sunlight that passes through it. This means that if frost deposits on solar panels their ability to produce electricity will be severely reduced. Once the Sun gets up though, it should melt the frost, but on cold winter days the sunlight may not be powerful enough to do so.
- Snow: after any amount of snowfall, whether light or heavy, it will be inevitable that solar panels will be covered with snow. There is not much you can do about this until it stops snowing. Only then can you wipe away the snow and allow the panels to function again.
- Wet leaves: It is inevitable that when leaves fall off trees that many will get blown onto the panels, and if conditions are damp then the leaves will stick to them. Needless to say this will drastically affect the efficiency of the panels, so it would be a good idea to remove the leaves as soon as possible.
- Bird droppings: It's surprising how common it is to find bird droppings where you least expect them. Vehicles and most large objects out in the open get hit frequently and solar panels tend to be prime targets because of their vicinity to where birds prefer to roost. Fortunately, bird droppings are water soluble and get washed away when it rains, but during prolonged dry periods it will be a good idea to inspect the panels and wipe away any bird droppings.
Perhaps the most dangerous elements that could damage paneling are hailstones and ice. Small cracks caused by the force of pounding hailstones will let water in, which upon freezing at night or in the winter will expand and create larger cracks.
All these hindrances will affect the efficiency of solar paneling, so it will be a good idea to routinely inspect it as a precaution. There is nothing more inconvenient than having to replace a whole panel just because it was neglected. It is rather like not being bothered to clean the headlamps of your car - after a while they will cease to perform properly because the beam of light can't get through the accumulated dirt and grime.
