Don't you love Spring? And what's better than homegrown vegetables straight from your own garden? Especially with vegetable prices sky-rocketing these days, it's that much more of a bargain in more ways than one. It's not too early to think and plan for the season. A well-planned garden will be less work in the long run, and definitely less money than you will spend in groceries for fresh vegetables weekly.
Great gardens start from the ground up. Instead of trying to break in the existing soil, it's much easier and far less labor-intensive to grow the best vegetables in quality top soil. Here are a few quick tips to get you started towards a bountiful garden this season:
1. Build Raised Beds.
Raised beds are pretty simple with frames eight-ten inches deep. They are staked to keep them in place. Composite boards or wood are used for the popularity and ease of use. Sometimes other material, such as landscape blocks or cinder blocks would work, as well. Beds should be no wider than approximately four feet. This enables you to be able to reach all parts by leaning near the edge.
2. Good Soil is a Must.
Fill the beds with topsoil or "black dirt." Bagged soil tends to be slightly more expensive than bulk soil. But moving bags rather than wheelbarrows of dirt can be easier and more practical for a small bed.
3. Choose the Right Spot.
Place beds where they will receive full sun, and definitely in a spot that won't hold standing water. Placement of your garden will make the difference in a thriving plants or struggling to make it. Everyone wants a thriving garden, and healthy plants-sunlight, good soil and moisture will do the rest.
4. Water Regularly.
Avoid large gaps from wet to dry and vice versa. Your garden needs an even amount of consistent moisture. A drip irrigation system on a timer could help here. You can also use a hose-end sprinkler when watering works too. If you aren't using a timer, just make sure you're conscientious and don't wait until all your plants are looking sickly and wilted before taking the hint to water.
5. Pest and Weed Control.
A garden that's well-cared for often needs little or no pest controls. In this case there should be very limited damage that you can view. Weeds are easily controlled by adding mulch-grass clippings (not treated by any chemicals), ground leaves or even compost. Bare ground definitely creates an avenue for more weeds, which are easily controlled with some basic maintenance. Pests will be controlled best by allowing each plant room to grow and avoiding any crowding issues.
These few tips will help you plan, start and produce a great garden full of luscious vegetables ready for your family's meals. Enjoy!
