Cockatiels are becoming more and more popular among bird lovers and more and more people are thinking about getting one for themselves or their children. But there are some things you have to take into consideration before you decide to buy a cockatiel bird. In this article, I will show you what you need to know about cockatiel birds so you can take care of them properly and insure their well being.

First, here are some basic facts about cockatiels in general. First of all, while cockatiels are part of the parrot family, they don't have the same screeching voice most parrots have. However, you can still teach them how to talk. They're also smaller in size and have long pointed tails. To recognize a male cockatiel, you have to look at its face. Male cockatiels have a bright yellow face, chest and forehead. Female cockatiels, on the other hand, don't have these features.

If you want to raise healthy baby cockatiels, it's always better that you go the natural route. Let the parents feed the babies so they can give them the enzymes and bacteria they will need to properly digest their food. If you hand feed your baby cockatiels with formula, they won't get the immunities they need to fight diseases later on. Hand feeding your baby cockatiels will expose them to more bacteria and increase their chances of catching diseases.

If you absolutely want to hand feed your baby cockatiel, make sure you go with top quality formula. Also make sure that you get yourself a proper thermometer so you can check the temperature of the formula. If the formula you're serving your baby cockatiels is over 106 degrees Fahrenheit, they could die, so don't take this matter lightly.

It's very important that you keep your cockatiels away from hash chemicals such as bleach or ammonia. Cockatiels have very sensitive respiratory systems and they can get infections if you expose them to dangerous chemicals. This is why you should always keep them away from the kitchen. Pots and other cooking material can send off dangerous chemicals that could be detrimental to your cockatiel's health.

You should never handle your cockatiel if you have a cold or any other infectious disease. Baby cockatiels have weak immune systems, so they're very vulnerable to diseases. You should always use gloves and clean your hands with hand sanitizer before touching them.

Cockatiel can be very pleasant animals if you raise them right. But if you want to save yourself the trouble that comes with hand feeding your baby cockatiels yourself, you should think about getting a fully weaned bird. That will save you a lot of time and trouble.
