Parrots are smart, quite possibly they may be the smartest pets you can have. In order to keep them from being bored, you need to find stimulating things for them to do and play with. This is why toys for parrots are so important.
If parrots get bored, they will start feather plucking, and will end up with a large bald spot on the chest. Parrots crave stimulation and excitement. They love to be with their flock, and they consider you to be part of their flock.
If you don't have time to spend with your parrot, he can become neurotic and pick up some bad habits that you will have to help him unlearn. If you can't spend time with your bird, you can do the next best thing, give him some stimulating toys to play with.
Parrots are great at solving puzzles, untying knots, and taking nuts and bolts apart. All parrots love to pick up things with their beak and run their tongue across it. Their tongue not only helps them talk, it is a great sense organ as well, which parrots use for tasting their food. But their tongue is also like a third hand for parrots.
It can be expensive buying large parrot toys, so a lot of people like to make parrot toys to cut down on the expense. Cheap parrot toys are simple and fun to make. And your parrot will love to play with them.
In order to make your own parrot toys you will need a few basic tools; a hammer, a saw and a drill. You will also need some scrap lumber (a couple of feet of 1x6 and 2x4 cut into triangle and rectangle shapes). A few nuts and bolts (1/2 inch diameter bolts or larger), some sisal rope, a few leather straps, and a few pieces of chain.
Drill some holes in the boards that the bolts and fit through and tighten the nuts. Drill some smaller holes and tie the rope and leather straps through the holes. Place several knots in the rope or leather and let them hand down about six inches or so. Connect the chain to the board and hang it from your parrot's cage. He will have something to climb on, and will enjoy un-bolting the nuts and bolts and untying the knots. My cockatoo would actually take the rope and weave it through the holes and tie new knots in the rope.
Parrots also love bright colors, so you can paint your homemade parrot toys to give him some visual stimulation. Because parrots will eat the wood, use a safe paint that will not harm your bird. Food color makes a great paint, it turn the wood bright red, green, yellow and blue and will not harm you parrots.
If you don't feel like a craftsman, don't worry, you can still make your own parrot toys without any work. Simply save the empty roll from your paper towels, and stick them through the bars of the parrot cage. Most parrots love to shred them and it will keep your bird occupied for hours.
Homemade parrot toys may not be as fancy as the store bought toys, but your parrot will still have lots of fun playing with them. When you make your own parrot toys, you put a lot love into each one, and that is something that you can't get with a store bought toy. As you can see, good toys for parrots don't have to cost a lot of money.
