The fringe of a green, sometimes known as the "first cut", is the ring of grass just off the green. It is generally the same kind of grass as the green, only left to grow a little bit higher. Typically, it is 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch higher, not that much, but enough to make a noticeable difference. Beyond the fringe is the "rough" or second cut. This is usually different grass, more like fairway grass, and left much higher. If you aer in this area, you are likely not putting the ball. The fringe is also not actually a part of the green, and a ball on the fringe cannot be marked, lifted or cleaned. In fact, for purposes of shooting first, a player who is still on the fringe, and not touching the green at all is considered "away" even if their ball is closer than someone else who is on the green.
This section of non-green is generally not too wide, rarely more than three feet. So even if you are at the back of the fringe, putting from here only means you need to deal with 24-30 inches of higher grass. To make this work, you need to put a little more speed on the ball, and make sure you hit it firmly. As a rule of thumb, consider the fringe to be twice as long as the green, that is, to hit it two feet, you need to put on a swing that will hit it four feet, if you were on the green.
Distance control -- As we said, consider the fringe to be twice as long as it really is. So, while you do have to pay attention to it, if you are 20 feet away from the hole, and you have two feet of fringe ahead of you, then you need to stroke the ball as if you were 22 feet away. Not the biggest difference. In fact, most errors in putting from the fringe come from players striking their ball too firmly, thinking they need to "power" their ball through it. This is almost always not so. If you are at course that is very wet, or they leave the grass high, then this is another story, but on a normal course under normal conditions. you just need a little more oomph to get the ball through, not a lot. Smacking the ball much harder will probably find you on the fringe on the other side of the green -- how many times has this happened to you?
Striking the ball -- Once you understand that you don't have to try to hit the ball a mile when out of the fringe, the next most important thing is to concentrate on striking the ball. When you are on the green, the flat surface of a putter is perfect for making sure you get a clean hit. When you are in grass, the blade of an iron is exactly right for slicing through to the ball, and making sure you get solid contact. Here in the fringe, you get neither advantage. You actually have to focus on making sure that you hit the middle of the ball with the middle of the club. If you fail to do this, you are more likely to bounce the ball through the fringe, which will not give you a good result. Keep your head down, and keep your eye on the flight of your club.
Putting from the fringe is very similar to putting from the green, the more complicated you make it, the more likely you are to miss the shot. Don't over hit, and do make sure to make solid contact, and you should be fine.
