These attractive birds are almost manmade in color. You hardly ever see any other animal as vibrantly colored as these finch. They can have orange, red or even gray heads. Their back can be and combination of blue or green and their bodies can be yellow, whiter or even purple. As described you can tell they belong in a toy store, not the wild. In nature these birds black, red and yellow headed. Since man has started breeding, any combination of these colors can be seen. Just as in any other bird species, the male is the one that attracts attention, while the female is normally more mellow, blending into the background. Gouldian Finches are known to be easily stressed by the simplest of things, like changes in housing or movement of their nests. This stress can lead to less resistance to disease. The Gouldian Finch is like any other finch, being very active, social birds. They do well with another finch, but do not do well by themselves. The cages for these birds should be of either wood or metal, but not brass. This type of metal is toxic to these birds and should be avoided at all times. Of all other finch species, these birds need the largest amount of flying space, at least twenty inches, being the bare minimum.
These birds are wonderful, cheerful birds that make all kinds of sounds, often a soft chirping, however, only males sing, and some of them not at all. Just because these types of birds need more attention then others, does not mean that these colorful, funny creatures with cheerful personalities are not worth the effort.
