We're in tough financial times, there's no ignoring it. Times are tough. REALLY tough! However I ran across a plan the other day that just could help your small store. It was a flashback from growing up in the big city. In a really huge city. During the holiday season mom would take the whole family out to the park for a little outdoor fun but it was too uncomfortable to stay outside for too long so we would end up at a department store. It was one of the biggest, multistory department stores but it really isn't important which. So there were these amazing train displays there. You had to wait because there were so many kids. Finally when kids were dragged away by impatient parents you'd get your chance to press the button that started one of the several trains to move around the setup. What a great time we had there! The display was huge as a swimming pool! As a kid you were just captivated by the world of imagination while you were in front of that track.
And here's the thing, even though my mom didn't have very much cash and always came in with the determination of never wasting a cent, by the end of the day it seemed like we inevitably ended up buying some little thing, even if it was just a soda from one the street venders. So here's the thought I had:
Experiment with g gauge model railroad setups in the display window of the store:
Toy stores have known this for a long time and hardware stores have found this a natural combination since shoppers can buy the parts and kits for model railroading all right there. But I think other kinds of businesses could really benefit by having a model railroad, especially eye catching g scale trains and tracks. If you're part of a set of stores or by a mass transportation hub this could be perfect for your business. You don't really need to be a business that is in any way toy related. A family physician's office might just have a train display to keep the kids busy while they waited to see the doctor or for prescriptions. Kids would lure their parents into the business and many parents would have great difficulty leaving without buying their kids a little train at least. Some parents would even be grateful for the time that their kids are enthralled by the trains to browse for themselves. The upfront cost of setting up the railroad and the lost space would pay for itself in no time. Any location near where families congregate could utilize these little lures. Thankful parents would make for continued business.

You know how you've been thinking of making your cute little cottage into a Bed-and-Breakfast now that your whipper snappers have all gone to college. Want to have a quirky feel for your western style barbecue but can't think of what to do? If you have a swimming pool in the back or a patio where people eat you could have a g gauger that snakes around by the tables and rig it so that the train actually takes out the drinks to people. The quirkiness would be sure to bring out parents with their children and you could make a little bit of added income by selling model train related accessories like key chains. If you have a nearby tourist trap that is locomotive related you could create a tie-in to this site. Think of the American history tie-ins in your local area.
Yeah, times are rough. But that is exactly why it is the most opportune time to look for a business augmenting angle like this. Whatever you can do to make your business seem different and to have it stand out from your competitors can help the bottom line. This is only some of the ways you could utilize model trains.
