You will need a beehive, a smoker, and the right beekeeping apparel - definitely a beekeeping veil, and preferably a full beekeeping suit. You really cannot keep can keep bees without any of these items. These are essential things that you need, so do not scrimp on them.
After you have gathered up everything you need, it's time to go out and get some bees to start your small colony. There are several ways to get bees. Sometimes you can get a swarm of bees that have relocated inside hollow trees or even your neighbor's backyard. If ever you decide to relocate some bees to your hive, make sure you're protected and you know how to correctly do it. Ideally, get an experienced beekeeper to do the job for you, or at least to help.
You can also get packaged bees - these loose bees will come from a bee breeder, usually in the mail in a wooden and wire mesh box. The queen will be kept in a separate cage during transit. You then just empty these bees into your framed hive.
The other option is to buy a nucleus colony. This comes in a nuc box, complete with frames, bees, brood and food. You just transfer the frames into your empty hive. This is the easiest way to start, but is more expensive.
Lastly, you should be aware that beekeeping is a hobby that requires special skills and knowledge so make sure you read up on the latest news and trends about the hobby of beekeeping. Get yourself a good guidebook that explains to you all the other necessary equipment and steps that you need to know of so that you're well informed on this hobby.
