Keeping a supply of low cost puppy chew toys can be a challenge. Those little varmints love to seek, chew and destroy! Here are 4 alternatives that will make playtime with your pup a hoot and a holler.
For many years my husband and I trained and bred German Shepherd dogs. Actually it would be more accurate to say our entire family took on the responsibility. We loved raising puppies. But it's hard work indeed when you do it right.
One of our greatest joys was socializing our little pups. Part of socializing involves playtime. When you have a litter of 6 to 8 puppies with very sharp pearly whites, buying toys is like flushing your money down the drain repeatedly.
A bit of creativity, trial and error, and super suggestions from professional training friends led us to rely on an economical but useful mixture of toys for our canine kiddos.
First on the list was an ingenious use of old plastic milk containers, gallon or quart. This is so simple you may wonder why you didn't think of it yourself!
Rinse the containers tossing away the screw caps. Using nylon or cotton cord (or even clothesline cord), tie the jugs together by threading and knotting the cord through each handle. You choose how many containers to tie together. You end up with a line of milk jugs puppies love to drag around.
Their sharp teeth can grab into the plastic container or the cord. They love playing tug of war and chewing on it. The noise they make with the jugs gets them used to unfamiliar noises. Eventually the jugs get pretty flattened, but you can throw them in the recycling bin after cutting off the cord!
Another winner with teething little canines is a sock. Confused? A simple solution again. Take an old sock, or a couple, and tie knots in them. The little Godzilla's can chew to their heart's content dragging them everywhere. Toss them in the wash and they are as good as new.
A variation on the sock toy is a burlap wrapped toy. Buy some burlap or some people have old burlap sacks. Cut 2 nice size squares. Stitch 3 of the 4 sides. Stuff it full of old socks or old t-shirts, then stitch the final side. Attaching a handle of burlap allows you to drag the toy around and the pups can chase after it. Pups seem to have enormous energy, but that energy can be zapped pretty quickly running their short little legs.
One final suggestion for you. Get a galvanized tub you might find at a farm supply store. Sometimes the local hardware stores will stock them if you live in or near a rural area.
Fill the tub with some water and those little fidos will go flying into their own mini-pool. We tried plastic swimming pools, but their sharp nails always end up destroying the floor of the pool. The galvanized tub is a real hoot to watch them dive in and out. Plus, you end up with clean pooch fur after all the fun!
If you have a single puppy or an entire brood, toys are a necessity for those teething sore gums. Even when they aren't teething, toys offer you an opportunity to interact, exercise and socialize with your new canine addition to the family. For sure give the milk jug toy a try and see how much fun it can be once your kiddo gets over the sound the plastic jugs make!
