Many people prefer to make their own parrot cages as opposed to purchasing a premade cage. This allows them to design the cage to their specific needs, whether it is fitting it in an awkward shaped space in the home or creating it in a design that will look great and blend well with the décor of their home. While designing and building your own cage can be rewarding, there are three specific things that you should consider as you gather the supplies so you do not end up facing a very bad situation with the parrot that you love. Parrots are a big part of the family for those that own them so keeping them safe is a concern that should be considered from the beginning of the construction project.
As you look for the screen to go around the parrot cages, do not take the most inexpensive route and purchase some of the hardware cloth that is available at the home improvement stores. While it does come in many different sizes and it does look like a screen, it can be very dangerous to your parrot. If you were to take a close look at this hardware cloth you would see all of the small particles the zinc globs that are on it. Parrots have strong beaks and they can break these globs and particles off and ingest them. This can be very dangerous for parrots so be sure to use a screen that is free from these particles and globs so that your bird can enjoy the beautiful cage that you build for a long time and be remain safe.
As you look for the wires that will be used to create the parrot cages, be careful with wires that are labeled as begin "galvanized". When an item is galvanized it means that the steel or iron that it is made of is covered by a layer of zinc. Zinc is toxic and can lead to devastating results. While most of the nuts and bolts and wires that you will need will be galvanized, you can still make use of them if you clean them properly prior to using them. You can wash the materials to remove the zinc dust that is likely covering them but it will not remove the zinc coating which can be ingested by a bird that chews. You should remove the zinc coating prior to using it. This can be done by sandblasting or by soaking. Remember that once you have taken off the zinc coating, it will rust much quicker so you may want to apply a nontoxic paint to slow down the rusting process.
The last tip to avoid disaster when you design your parrot cages is to use only untreated wood. Many parrots love to chew and if they chew on wood that has chemicals such as stains or bug repellant then they are likely to become very sick. If you build your parrot cages with materials that are safe for your parrot then you are sure to make them, and your family, very happy with the ending product. It will be in your design and be perfect for your pet.
