That new Doberman puppy you just adopted is really cute and funny until you find him with one of your favorite shoes in his mouth or chewing on the leg of your new sofa. Right then and there you decide that you are going to have to break your Doberman of chewing.
You can forget that idea right now. Dogs chew. It's as natural as breathing. Puppies chew more often than adult dogs due to teething. You aren't going to get a dog to quit chewing entirely. What you can do is teach him what things are acceptable to chew on and what things are not.
Toys, Toys and More Toys
The first thing you need to do is supply your Doberman puppy with his own things to chew on. This means toys, lots of them and ones made from all different textures. It is estimated that every dog should have 12 to 14 toys available to choose from at all times. These should include soft squishy toys, rope chews and hard chews. This will give your puppy plenty of options when he feels the urge to chew.
Sly of Hand
When you see your Doberman pup chewing something he is not supposed to be chewing on tell him "NO" or "STOP" in a stern commanding voice. Offer him one of his toys as a substitute. Dobermans are very intelligent so while it may take some time eventually he will get the message and start choosing to chew on those toys that are acceptable instead of those things that are not.
Yuck!
There are products on the market that you can spray on your furniture legs and other things that you don't want chewed on. These products won't harm your puppy, but will taste bad to him. Sour apple spray was made to help prevent dog chewing. It will discourage your puppy from chewing on forbidden items and is less likely to stain than some of the other sprays.
Avoid Confusion
Some people give their dogs old shoes and other things they are not going to use any longer to chew on instead of buying toys. The problem with this is your Doberman can't tell the difference between an old shoe and a new shoe. He will be confused if he is given a shoe to chew and then reprimanded if he chews on a different shoe. If an object is off limits for chewing, then keep it off limits. Otherwise, don't blame him when your new expensive shoes become his chew toy.
Consistency is the key to teaching your new Doberman puppy what he can and can't chew on. Remember the goal is not to keep him from chewing but to teach him what is acceptable for him to chew. Keep that goal in mind and your dog will be happy and well adjusted.
