Finches are such beautiful birds and they are full of song. Pet finches can be such a wonderful addition to any household. They will become the center of educational attraction for the children, the most loved family pet, enjoyed by everyone. The wonderful thing about finches besides their beauty and song is that they require very little care and attention. Now I said "very little" they do need care and attention; here I will give you some tips on how to take good care of your pet finch.
Learning how to care for your finch is not as hard as one may think, and once you have mastered these simple yet useful principles, you will be on your way. Assuming you've already bought a finch and have a nice cage that was recommended by your local pet store. I will start with listing some basics to help you get started:
1.) Feeding time: Unlike other types of song birds, finches are not picky when it comes to feeding. Eating seeds are what they do, and seed can be bought at your local hardware or pet store. Looking for different kinds of seeds is fine because most of the food available has been developed with great nutritional value in mind. Making sure that your finch has good fresh water in the cage is important. Also having a bathing dish inside especially in hot weather is encouraged as well.
2.) How to handle your Finch: Unlike birds that love to climb on your finger, finches really don't like to be handled. If you do handle your finch, please be as gentle as possible, because the bird can develop trauma. They will shy away if you try to grab at them even though they look beautiful and attractive. Do try to avoid having them eat from your hand; allowing them to eat naturally is better in the long run.
3.) Cleaning the cages: Making sure the cage is clean is essential for a loving relationship. Now, you don't have to clean the cage everyday but keeping an eye for empty shells and wastes is important. Finches at home in their cages are nondestructive if they are in their own environment. If you have cats, make sure the bars of the cage are as close as possible. This will prevent a mishap from happening. Always remember to close the door after feeding or cleaning, or you will come home to an empty cage.
You can have several finches in one cage as long as there is plenty of room for attempts at flight. If you can afford a vertical cage this can benefit your bird(s) because they like to fly up and down, this is fun to watch for you and for your children. Having more than one finch is nice because they can keep each other company. Although finch care is rather basic, following these steps is very important for the health and well- being of your pet finch.
If this is your first time owning a finch, this is probably one of the wisest choices of domestic birds you could have made. They sound so beautiful when they sing, and they can simply brighten anyone's day just by the sounds they make. Teaching everyone in your home how to care for your finch is vital. You always want to make sure they are not being scared or frightened in any way. If you have a finch that doesn't sing this may be the cause of it. So take good care of your pet finch and they will brighten up your day.
