What do I need in a cockatiel cage?
What do I need in a cockatiel cage? Name EVERYTHING from toys, to perches, to food/water. Automatic 12 points for person who gives me the first best answer. I am getting one from a breeder. It is 4 months old and male.
You need of course, food and water. And the containers to put the food and water in. I suggest having an actual food bowl that hangs on the side of the cage for the food. Reason being? Birds tend to poop in their water. A lot. Also it helps them from making a big watery mess inside their cage if they decide they want a bath.
Now, you should get at least 2 toys. Anything bright and colorful and it says it's meant for cockatiels will do. They love to chew on string and raw hide. So a toy that has string or raw hide on it would do great.
Depending on how big your cage is, you'll need enough perches, but not too many! Get at least 2 perches. They should be of different textures to avoid the bird getting bumblefoot from being on the same surface all the time. Also make sure they're big enough for the bird to sit on. His toes shouldn't be going all the way around the birch and back. Lol.
Also, get a mite protector. Birds can bring in mites and that is bad for them and you. You can get them from Petco or Petsmart. They're supposed to hang on the back of the cage on the OUTSIDE so the birds can't chew on it.
To make sure they keep their nails and beak trimmed, you should make one of those 2 perches a sand perch. Keeps their nails trimmed and if they chew on it, beak trimmed. Cuttlebone also works great too when it comes to keeping the beak trimmed, and is also a good source of vitamins and calcium. You can get both these at Petco and Petsmart.
And a blanket of course to cover them up at night time 
Just make sure that the cage is at least big enough to support the bird. If the tail feathers are being crushed against the cage floor or another perch, it's too crowded in there! It also needs to be big enough for their wing span as well. These birds have a tendency to flap their wings around the cage when they want attention. Not kidding!
