If you have a preschooler (ages 3-5), you have probably struggled with finding creative and effective forms of discipline. There are many viable strategies to help parents teach their young children self-control. You must pick and choose which option(s) work best for you and your family, and consistently apply these strategies in order for them to be effective.
One extremely valuable behavior strategy for preschool aged children is the Rewards Chart. You will want to make a colorful chart with the child's name at the top and several columns and rows beneath his/her name. You may wish to label each column with a specific desired behavior, like "Using nice words" or "Following rules." For each day that the child performs the desired behavior, you will place a sticker underneath that column.
Think of your child's "currency." In other words, what can you use to encourage him to comply with your set of desired behaviors? Does he love movies? You can plan a sleepover with him and any of his siblings and yourself when he completes the chart. At the sleepover he will get to choose his favorite movie to watch with all of you, snuggled onto the living room floor. Maybe there is a particular toy that he has been desiring for some time. If that is the case, when his chart is full you can take him on a trip to the toy store.
Reward and praise your preschooler's positive behaviors with excitement and pride. Make sure he knows how much it means to you that he is complying. However, if the time comes that he chooses NOT to comply with your desired behaviors, you may want to consider having a "Negative Reinforcement" strategy ready to implement.
An effective punishment for a preschooler can be as simple as a Time-Out. Choose a place in your house where he does not have access to any toys, perhaps the bottom step or the edge of the kitchen floor. Designate this spot as the Time-Out Spot. When your child disobeys your desired behaviors or "rules", you may choose to give him a warning, or you may choose to send him immediately to Time-Out. He should sit in the chosen spot for as many minutes as he is years old. So a 4 year old would sit for 4 minutes. Setting a timer is very effective, so you do not lose track of how long he has been in Time-Out.
When the punishment time is over, tell your child that you love him but you do not like the behavior that he just displayed and that you expect next time that he will choose differently. Explain things calmly but firmly so your child knows exactly who is in control.
By applying both positive and negative reinforcements on a regular and consistent basis, your child will quickly learn what is expected of him and will begin to comply. Expect the process to take several months to fully take effect, but after that you will have a much more behaved child.
