What type of bird should I choose?
I'm 13 and I've been dying to get a pet for months now. I've done some research on different types of parrots, and I really like Lutino Cockatiels, Lovebirds, and Blue Parakeets. I've never had a pet bird, but I've had a lot of pets. I'm looking for a bird that's colorful, and not too expensive, but I know buying a cage, toys, and other supplies is going to add up to a lot. I'd like a bird that I can take out of its cage and hold, and one I could teach tricks and hopefully to talk. I'll have time to play with it every day, but not during the day because of school. A friend told me birds stink, and was wondering if I clean the cage weekly if the smell will still be a problem. I'd appreciate an answer and whatever advice anyone can give me.
Good for you for doing research before going out and buying an animal! Especially birds! You have no idea how many morons are on here asking people what's wrong with their bird because they have no idea how to properly take care of them because they went out and bought it for their pretty colors, or because they saw how friendly other birds were with people!!!
ANYWAYS.
Parakeets, cockatiels, and lovebirds can all come out of their cage to play. However though they all have different personalities. I'll give you a bit of information on each of these birds you listed.
Parakeets: Very outgoing, hyper, they chatter all day (not loud, but it's noticeable), VERY SMART, they can learn to be EXCELLENT talkers, once tame they can be very friendly. They're the smallest out of the birds you listed, which means the smallest prices because you'd be getting the smallest toys, cage, food, ect. I've owned these birds before, they're not MY favorite, but they were pretty rewarding. Parakeets can handle you being gone at school all day, they usually keep themselves entertained all day as long as they have lots of things to do inside their cage. And when you come home, it will be glad to see you. Also they're probably the most playful of the birds you listed.
Cockatiels: Very shy, they can be noisy if you don't properly train them, VERY SMART, not the best of talkers (they CAN talk, but it's rare. They prefer just to whistle tunes), they can be VERY affectionate once they get to know you, they love to cuddle and spend time with you all the time, but they won't freak out if you're gone for a few hours. They can handle alone time for a while. They're my personal favorite, I own two right now. They're very rewarding birds, and their price is fairly cheap.
Lovebirds: I don't know much about these birds. I have heard though that they're hard to be kept alone. They always want to have company, or else they're loud. So you'd either need to be with it all the time, or have two of them so they can keep each other company. Also they're at the top of the price list here. I'm not sure if they can be good talkers or not, but I know they can learn tricks and whistles. They can be very affectionate once they get to know you.
Your friend told you wrong. Birds themselves don't stink, it's their cage that CAN stink if you don't clean it enough. Yes, cleaning it once a week is perfect. Or you can clean it more than that if you want, just don't wait longer than a week. Bird poop does start to give off an odor if it's allowed to pile up. Also their food dishes can smell if you don't keep those clean as well. However, the bird itself is always clean and never has an odor, as long as the environment around them is clean.
My advice is that if you want a bird, go with the parakeet. It would be the most compatible for the things you want, a good talker, a bird that won't freak out when you're gone for a few hours, a bird that can keep itself entertained for hours, a very smart bird that loves interactions and learning new things, and not very expensive.
Good luck to you. I hope you find what you're looking for
