Each time I was preparing a "for kids" craft project to teach, I would test it out on my own children first. I was amazed at some of the things they created for me.
Although my kids are grown now, many of those projects stand out in my mind (and some are still around the house).
One particular project is "Hold That Worm". It's really simple and inexpensive. Yet very functional!
My kids (and others) had fun crafting them and they continued to remake them throughout the years, adding more sophisticated embellishments. One of their "worms" even had eyelashes (which I am convinced came from my makeup supplies!).
But let's start making one of your own...
Hold That Worm
You'll need:
* 3 sturdy dinner-sized paper plates (either heavy duty paper or the Styrofoam kind)
* 1 sturdy lunch-sized paper plate (either heavy duty paper or the Styrofoam kind)
* paint (any color---you can use spray paint, too)
* glue
* 16" of 18-gauge plastic coated wire (you can match the paint color or contrast it)
* wire cutters
* 3-4 Styrofoam balls ( 3" or larger---these will be his feet!)
* 2 wooden beads with holes
* scissors
* pliers
* large wiggly eyes
* permanent marker
Cut the lunch-sized paper plate in half. Discard one of the halves (or you can save it for another project---I NEVER throw anything away). Then cut each of the dinner-sized paper plates in half ( you'll need both halves of these). Paint and let dry.
When the paint is dry, glue each dinner-sized paper plate to its other half rim-to-rim. You should have 3 "pockets".
Glue each pocket back-to-back until all three are connected. Glue the rim of the lunch-sized paper plate to one end of your three pockets ( this forms the head).
Cut each Styrofoam ball in half. Paint in a contrasting color to the pockets. Let dry.
To make feet, take one half of the Styrofoam ball and lay on table flat side down. Using the width of your thumb, measure
and mark up from the bottom anywhere on the ball. Mark once more 1/4" up from first mark.
Between those two marks make a narrow indentation with a craft stick or pencil. Fill indentation with glue.
Rest each pocket rim into "feet" ( indentations), being sure it now sits flat on a surface. Let dry.
Glue wiggly eyes on lunch-sized paper plate and draw other facial features with marker. Let dry. Cut small slits into worm's head where you wish to place "feelers".
Paint each wooden bead. Let dry.
Cut plastic coated wire into two 8" pieces with wire cutters.
Slide wooden bead on end, crimping the end of wire to secure the bead in place. Add a drop of glue to the bead's hole to secure even more. Twist wire in several places for a carefree appearance. Tip: Wrap wire around a pencil, remove and stretch to create a curly effect. These are now the feelers.
Thread end that does NOT have the bead on it into slits you made on the head. Crimp ends to secure.
There you have it. This cute worm can now be used to organize things on your desk.
You can really make this fancy. Add lace or hair or eyelashes ( stay out of Mom's, please) or pom poms for noses or make a tail or other animals (maybe a lion?).
I remember walking into my son's room one day and noticed that his "worm" had grown---he had made additional pockets and added them!
Just have fun.
Happy Crafting.
See you next time.
