the school caretaker

In the corner of the playground
down dark and slimy stairs,
lived a monster with a big nose
full of curly hairs.

He had a bunch of key rings
carved out of little boys,
he confiscated comics
and all our favourite toys.

He wore a greasy uniform,
looked like an undertaker,
more scary than a horror film,
he was the school caretaker.

I left the school some years ago;
saw him again the other day.
he looked rather sad and old
shuffling on his way.

It's funny when you grow up
how grown-ups started growing down,
and the snarls upon their faces
are no more than a frown.

In the corner of the playground
down the dark and slimy stairs,
sits a lonely little man
with a nose full or curly hairs.

Yes i do think the poet is quite successful in getting the reader to sympathise with the school caretaker....

He sits in the corner of the playground and appears like a monster to the children.He confiscates their comics and toys.But behind this horrible monster is a dedicated caretaker who works hard to maintain discipline at school.That is his job and he does full justice to it.If we observe carefully,the poet has described the caretakers uniform as greasy which indicates the amount of hardwork he does at school.The children despise him but do not realise whatever he does is his duty and would help make them a better human being.

As the clock of time ticks away,children come and go but the caretaker spends his entire life sitting near those dark and slimy stairs.He has no life of his own,no desires,no aspirations.And the children for whom he sacrificed all his pleasures of life call him scary and horrible.The plight of the caretaker lies in the fact that though he is surrounded by children whole day long,his heart is void,his life lonely.The same scary monster down the dark and slimy stairs now grows old and has lost the vigour to perform his duties.Childhood and youth are the two phases of life when one needs to be taken care of.He took care of those children during their childhood but there is noone to take care of him when he grows old.Being solitary in life is the worst punishment a man can get.Here i would like to quote a few lines written by George Gordon(Noel),6th Lord Byron

Years steal
fire from the mind as vigour from the limb;
and life's enchanted cup but sparkles near
the brim.

the caretakers life is like a candle that burns itself to enlighten the world around it....
