Hey, my family was thinking about taking in an 18+ year old quacker parrot. Were not sure how old he is. None of us will be home for the beginning of the day. Is there anything we should know about taking care of him/diet/behavior/how to take teh best care of him. We already have a cocktail, and we have a basic white cage for him, and a relatively open room, where he is nearly always free to go where he wishes. He has only once gone downstairs, and seemed amazed and delighted, and slightly afraid. we have two cats, and their are great friends, he sits on their backs every now and then, although at first they were intent on eating him, they know that they would be shunned for even considering the act, so they play instead (amazingly, they still bring in teh occasional partly eaten bird).

You would want to keep the quaker quarentined for 60 days. This means away from your tiel and in a separate room.
I'd be asking more of the reason as to why they are getting rid of the bird first? Quakers can be very loud! Demanding, obnoxious, they are one person birds, and illegal in 18 states. This is not a bird you can leave unattended like you do your tiel.
This quaker will eat your cats, not the other way around, lol. Although quakers are managable birds, they need to be supervised and not be left unattended outside of their cages.
You also don't mention the bar spacing of the cage. They need a parrot cage, not a tiel size cage. Quakers are known for breaking bars. They need stimulation to keep them from getting bored.
