A wooden go-kart is a vehicle that is not self-propelled. It is also called go-kart or, simply, cart. A go-kart has to be pushed forward and the steering mechanism is more than simple, either the driver uses his feet for steering the vehicle or the front axle is rotated with the help of rope to change the direction. In all, a go-cart plainly means loads of fun, not just for kids but for adults also. The cart can easily be made with the right set of materials and tools. Following is a step by step guideline for completing this task.
Materials and tools
The first step is to collect suitable materials and tools for the project. The materials required for the project are 3''x4'' wood plank, 1''x4'' lumber, 4 spooked wheels, 15 mm round metallic bar, 2'' and 5'' round nails, bolts, washers, split pins and nuts. Spooked wheels are the hardest part of material collection to find, they can be obtained from small bicycles or old prams. The tools needed are hammer, hand saw, spanner, electric drill, measuring tape and metal hacksaw.
Procedure
A standard go-kart has a simple size of 1.2m in length and 0.7m in width. The dimensions are completely alterable. The cart's height depends on the diameter of the wheel. Wheels of 270 mm diameter are considered ideal. The front axle turns right and left and can be easily controlled by the rope attached to its either end.
The main chassis is the first thing that should be made. It must have dimensions 1250mm x 75mm x 100mm. The length of chassis is not critical but it must positively allow the front axle to move freely without hitting the seating area. The front and rear axle are embedded in the axle cover which has a length of 550mm in length, 100mm in width and 75mm in depth. A groove of 15mm x 15mm has to be made in the cover in which the 15mm axle adjusts perfectly. The front support cover together with the axle is to be attached to the main chassis by 12mm bolt. The bolt should not be over tightened so that it will allow the axle to move freely right and left.
Four holes have to be drilled in the metal axle. The two holes in the center have to be 400mm apart so that they will help the axle to be securely fixed to the wooden cover. The remaining two holes are at the end for the split pins. These pins are meant for keeping the wheels and washers in place. For ensuring that the wheels stay in position, a washer has to be inserted first on the axle followed by the wheel and another washer. Lastly the split pin has to be placed in the hole. Grease has to be applied in the region where the wheel moves because this will prevent wear and tear. The rear axle has to be attached to the chassis with the help of round nails. The final thing that has to be made and assembled is the cart's seat. When this has been done, the wooden go-kart is ready for use.
