This is why Scorpio has three totems — the scorpion, the lizard and the phoenix.
"The Scorpion, Eagle or Gray Lizard."
Yes, I have heard of these three. I've found that each sign has something special about it - Libra is the only inanimate Sign (The Scales), Saggitarius is The only Mythological Sign (The Cenetar) and so forth.
This is Scorpios. Each one is a type of Scorpio personality.
Scorpion: The main and most common personality. They are the typical Scorpio, with all the good and bad that comes with it.
Eagle: The Eagle choses to rise above Vindictiveness and retaliation and is the most ideal personality. They are some of the best people you'll know - problem is, they usally don't start out as the Eagle. They have to learn to deal with their problems first but, in the end the Eagle is the Better personality.
Gray Lizard: Urgh! These are few in number but, oh so bad! They will let their Vindictiveness fester inside them (even if the offender didn't mean to offend) and they are the worst personality. They resent and fester and they will always hold a grudge. But, like a lizard, they will only feel this way. Grey Lizards almost never act on their hatered and very few express what they're really feeling. Obsession is a big one too - and paranoia. In short, they are the worst personality a Scorpio could be.
But, these aren't all signs - only the scorpio is the sign. It's more symbolic of the Scorpios choice of who they want to be. It also helps to sort out the good personalitys from the bad. It's a way of keeping the good ones from getting all the blame from the bad ones.
If you haven't read it yet, Linda Goodman's Book "Sun Signs" elaborates a little more on these types if personalitys - that's where I learned it from.

P.S. The Phoenix is like the Scorpios ability to come back from "Dark Waters" and not let it affect them poorly. Scorpios can go dark places but, they're one of the few signs who can come back.
