When to upgrade from a Junior Cricket Bat to a Senior one is dependent upon a number of factors.
Individuals height
Individual Strength
Bat Weight
Bat Handle Length
It may seem obvious, but the height of the person needs to be such that they can get sufficient grip and backlift from the bat without over stretching (if they are too large for the bat) or do not have the strength to consistently follow through with their shots. The batsman/woman needs to choose a bat with which they feel comfortable. It should avoid giving excessive vibration through the handle and up the arm, as not only can this be detrimental to the shot, but can also lead to unneccessary injuries.
If you are looking to play long innings, then you need to be able to keep swinging the bat for 2 hour sessions, so dont buy a bat which is too heavy. The bigger and heavier the bat does not necessarily mean that you will be able to hit the ball harder and further than anyone else. It is just as much in the timing as in the size of bat. Similarly, if a bat is too light then a batsman may feel that they have hit the ball hard enough to clear the fielder, but because there was not as much weight in the shot then it could easily result in a dismissal.
Therefore, for a 13-15 year old, a Junior Cricket bat may still be appropriate and of more benefit than a Senior one. The tendency will always be to 'upgrade' to the Adult/Senior one as soon as possible, but to do so too early may result in a lack of runs and confidence, so if you do choose a senior bat and it does not work, don't be afraid to go back to your Junior Cricket bat. The best way is to practice, practice and practice some more. Have a net with your new bat and see how it feels, if you are having to radically change your grip, stance or style then try it out. If after a short while it feels comfortable and you feel in control then stick with it, but if not bring the junior bat back and see how you get on with that.
