Should I get a Caique or a Military Macaw as a pet?
I have experience with smaller parrots, but I love large parrots as well. I currently live in an apartment, but I will be moving into a house in the next few months, and I'm willing to wait until I'm in a house to buy a bird. I've been doing research on both kinds of birds, and they both sound wonderful. My choice is between a baby White-Bellied Caique or a 20 year old Military Macaw who could use a bit of socializing. I will end up paying $300 more for the Caique and the cage since I would be getting her from a breeder if I decide on that bird. I'm willing to find the extra money, but I'd like to be sure of my choice! Does anybody have any experience with either type of bird? What would you recommend? I work quite a bit, but I devote as much time as possible to my pets in the evenings and weekends!
I currently have a black-headed caique and he's absolutely hilarious. He's definitely the funniest bird I've ever had... But he's also the most moschevious. Right now, he's trying to break into my aquarium stand, which houses a bunch of air tubes to my fish tank, and he loves to get in there and chew on them. Every time I look at him, he growls, and when I say, "No," and go to pick him up, he growls and hops away, only to start again when I turn away. They are VERY stubborn.
They're great little birds, but they're also the most demanding. He will literally scream from the time I walk in the door to when I take him out (I've tried ignoring this, for 2+ hours and he literally screamed the entire time). And also, if you work a lot, I would suggest getting two... Caiques are unique in the fact that they won't make you the "third wheel" if you get another one, they just view eachother as play accessories lol.
Everyone will tell you that birds are "so hard to take care of," and "not a good idea if you work," but that's really just B.S. If you've got time for them (adequate time, of course), then you'll be fine. I'm a full-time college student and I work, and I have plenty of extra time for my 4 birds and raising baby birds. So, enjoy whichever one you get!
