The utterance "society" is right at home with these little birds because of their drastically social nature. They are so friendly; they should always be in groups. They are such eavesdroppers resulting in often getting in the way of the mating of other species. Being full of life they are hardly ever forceful, they make extraordinary pets for first timer bird owners along with ones who have had birds for long periods of time.
Society Finches are thought to have been raised in Asia over three hundred years ago by Chinese and Japanese owners. They are believed to be a household White-backed Munia (Lonchura striata), but their ancestry is doubtful. These social animals grow to between four and on forth and four and three fourths inches. Society Finches have three basic color difference, Chocolate and white, fawn and white and pure white. There are also tri-colored, crested forms (developed in the 1930's) and solid colored birds. The thing that makes them so unusual and special is that no two are alike.
Society Finch make wonderful animals for the first timers. Besides their disposition, they due not cost much and are one of the simplest of birds to maintain. Like all animals, fresh food and water should be given daily for these enjoyable birds. A high quality finch seed mix will satisfy their need for millets and canary seed. Finch seed mix is easily obtained at any pet store. You should give the Social Finch green foods along with their ordinary seed. Green foods include chickweed and spinach. This should be provided in a separate container on a daily basis. Other items of interest for the Social Finch to eat can include eggs, apples or pears. You can even treat your finch with "special" foods like, honey, fruits and vegetables. Grit with charcoal is also needed for your Social Finch to aid in digestion along with valuable minerals and trace elements. Grit should be given in a separate container from their food or it can be sprinkled over a certain area. Cuttlebone should also be given to provide calcium for a strong beak and eggshells when mating, also the lime aids the birds in additional digestion elements in addition to the Grit. Since the Social Finch is such a wholesome bid almost all ailments can be traced back to improper diets, dirty living conditions or cold airflow. With proper diet and plenty of movement Society Finches can be very healthy birds.
Sporadically you can treat your Social Finch to a bath by setting a dish in the bottom of their cage. A container about 1 inch deep with ½ inch water inside should be perfect for it to enjoy, or you can clip a bath house to the side of the cage. Something that also should be done regularly is trimming their nails. Be careful not to clip the vein since the bird can easily bleed to death. All the supplies needed for nail trimming is available at a local pet shop.
