can i put a male and a female zebra finch in a cage with a nesting box and just expect them to breed?
...i realise this may sound naive and i am going to do some reading about it, but i was just wondering if anyone out there had some advice for me about it...
This is tricky, some pairs will never breed (zebras are on middle ground in breeding difficulty). I can give you tips my friend (a finch breeder) uses:
Heat: zebras do not like cold or drafts. 65 F is good
Quiet: they want a safe ( to a bird quiet = safe) place to raise young.
Privacy: put their cage in a low traffic area
Food quality: add fruits and veggies - I recommend the following recipie : 1 small boiled egg, 1/8 piece of skinned apple, carrot, (or spinach , lettuce, corn ) crunch up the shell or put it in the food process. veggies/fruits, lightly process, break the egg into pieces, You're aiming for a light fluffly texture (not wet or mushy) into crumbly bird bite sized pieces.
Patience: give them time to get to know each other. Its corny but true. Good luck
