The blue finches or otherwise tagged as the blue-capped cordon blue, from Africa is the favorite. Measuring at a whopping 4 to 5 inches, they are otherwise denominated as African waxbills.
There are two sub-species of this type of bird: one is the common cordon bleu (Uraeginthus Angolensis) and the other is the red-cheeked cordon blue (Uraeginthus Bengalus). Both novice and experienced, connoisseurs love them for their vibrant colors and commercial viability.
Description
As stated earlier, a bird's color is a great determiner of the finch family. The male blue-capped cordon bleu has a deeper shade of sky blue through out its whole body, head, and tail. The back, underbelly, and wings come in a hue of fawn or beige.
On the other hand, the females are of duller colors. They don't have the trademark sky blue coating. The same color of wings is adopted by the hen's head. Its breast, face, and tail, may sport a sky blue tint, though much duller and controlled.
Diet and care
The cordon bleus' are just like any of the other finches that feast on the common small seed mix that combines seeding grasses and millets. However, they also need to feed on insects such as ant eggs, fruit fly larva, mealworms, and waxworms; which can also be blended with soft food that keeps them alive from day to day.
Broccoli tops, carrot tops, chickweed, egg food, lettuce, spinach, and spray millet are also examples of other foodstuffs that can be fed to blue finches. Also, remember to include cuttlebone, grit, and plenty of fresh water in their meals.
Do not forget to trim their nails on occasion when you bathe them in water. It is highly recommended that their drinking water be placed separate from their bathing water.
Breeding
At the beginning of the breeding season, the blue finches which are housed together will tend to be more aggressive towards each other especially in the presence of their potential female mates. One should take note, that their habitat or housing is very important in their ability to proliferate kinds of their species.
Blue finches are commonly a good specimen for a mixed aviary, provided that there are many available spaces for them to move and that they are outnumbered by other species. Never put them in small cages because they get easily bored; which could lead to a problem of aggression and destructive behavior like feather plucking.
Weather changes should be taken into account as well. During winter, be sure to provide some heat suitable for large indoor aviaries. Allowing them to go in pairs may also work, but make sure that their cages can hold large flights.
Song
One of the pleasures enjoyed by devoted blue finch enthusiasts is its melodic call which can soothe a person's mood. Both male and females can answer to a call and also try to tap-dance with their feet. The good news is that both sexes can definitely sing though they are slightly different from each other. The Internet is a rich and open resource of knowledge and contains many volunteer organizations for blue finch enthusiasts. Just log on and find the community nearest you.
