cockatiel food help please?
First off. What are pellets? Is there a name brand? I went to the pet store today and the clerk couldn't answer my question. There was a brand called Kaytee exact tropical. Which was different shapes but the package said 'nuggets'. Is this pellet food? If not, what is a brand name that I could get.
I've read several different sites about cockatiels and many of them conflict with each other on what is good for a cockatiel and what isn't. some sites say no people food while other sites to give them people food. fruits and veges with the exception of avocados are good. And there is a debate on onions and garlic. Chicken and Fish are good. But, what about beef and pork? What about foods with sauces such as gravy and the such? Coleslaw? mayonaise? Any suggestions would be appreciated!
pellets are the healthiest staple for cockatiels-- seeds are too fatty if fed alone, and an entirely fresh diet won't provide enough balance/protein, etc.
There are a few different brands of pellets. There is nothing terribly wrong with Kaytee, but I would avoid it all the same (tends to get bad reviews). Zupreem cockatiel pellets are great--and my cockatiel loves them (its the only brand she will eat. I couldn't get her off her seeds with any other brand). Pellets are designed to be the "only" food you give your cockatiel according to the packaging, but its actually better if you offer some fresh fruit/veggies as a treat a few times a week. Apart from avocado (which you already know can be toxic to birds) rhubarb, sprouted limas, fava beans and navy beans, most things that are healthy for YOU are healthy for your bird. This means to of course avoid giving him/her sugar or fatty foods (this includes anything with mayo or gravy and most dairy...even though they usually LOVE cheese and yogurt). Chicken can be good for cockatiels, as well as the occasional hardboiled egg (good to feed with the finely crushed shell when a female is laying eggs). MY bird's favorite nonpellet foods are spaghetti, sliced grapes, applesauce, popcorn (without the artificial butter stuff), cooked carrot, and smoothie (I let her have some of mine in the morning).
generally speaking, fruits and veggies are all good for your bird, and birds like to eat when the family is eating (if they are in the room where eating happens) as they consider themselves a member of the family (or flock), so you can go ahead and give a tiny portion of the healthy parts of your dinner to your bird in a seperate bird dish in their cage, then take away the dish when everyone is done eating, to make sure none of the food gets old/goes bad.
