what is the best parrot breed for me?
hi, i am intrested in a parrot. i am a teenager and have a good amount of time to spend with any bird i purchase! i would prefer a bird that is ATLEAST a foot (12 inches) long and is fairly cuddly. i would also like a bird that has a good talking ability, but isnt too too loud. not too big either and one that would enjoy sitting on my shoulder, like, all the time and would be ok around people. i would prefer that it has a stable mental and emotional disposition. thank you soo much and I WOULD LIKE TO ASK THE USER UNDER THE NAME JADE IF YOU COULD ANSWER MY QUESTION U SOUND LIKE U KNO ALOT AND I NEED YOUR HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PS. i also would like to know the price range in the US and please try to steer clear of the more expensive ones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I actually saw your other questions ![]()
I just was avoiding them because I hate sounding like a total jerk >_<
The problem is that you have no previous parrot experience. So owning a large parrot is asking for trouble ![]()
They can easily get behavior problems because the owners of the bird have no experience with parrots and so they accidentally reinforce bad behavior.
That is why people say to first start out will a small parrot. A small biting parrot is much easier to handle then a large screaming and biting parrot ^o^.
But I understand your fascination with wanting to own a parrot. They are exotic, intelligent and loving.
But I think I know exactly how you can decide if parrots are the bird for you. You said that you are a teenager correct? Well many highschools ask that their students do a minimum amount of volunteer service.
Or if not when applying to college saying you did volunteer hours of your own freewill looks really good.
Well my advice is to find a parrot rescue near you and volunteer your time.
go to http://www.petfinder.com/index.html and put in your zip code along with "birds" It will list parrots that are looking for homes and next to the bird name the organization looking to rehome the parrot.
Contact them and ask if you could volunteer, tell them you always were interested in parrots and would like to learn about their care and interact with some different species before you get one.
Now if there are no parrot rescues near you I would recommend getting a smaller parrot AFTER you research their care. ![]()
Buy a cockatiel or conure care book.
I know, I know you had your heart set on a big exotic parrot. But we have to walk before we can run ![]()
I would recommend getting a cockatiel, they are wonderful and cuddly loving birds. They go for 55 dollars for a regular handtame grey and go up depending on color.
Green cheeks also run in very nice mutation colors and go for 125 dollars. They can be a tad nippy on occasion but if you have the time for a conure they make great first time parrots.
I would recommend looking for someone near you rehoming, you are not only giving a parrot a home but you also are saving money since they sell the parrot usually with all it toys, cage and other things.

Remember all parrots will make noise
No getting around it.
I know this isn't the answer you were looking for but it is true and my advice. Goodluck!
