If you are new to Doggy Daycare it's important to ask the right questions such as how they ensure that your dog will be safe while in their care. Here are some things that you can look for when considering a particular Daycare Center.
1. What kind of gates do they have? Are there double entries and exits? Meaning if a door gets opened is there another one right there to stop the dog from escaping and not direct access to run right out the front door?
2. If your dog is a jumper, how high are their fences? The fences outside should be at least 6 ft. tall and inside close to the same. Some dogs can scale even that height and if this includes your dog than be honest with the staff so they can be aware of that possibility.
3. Are things kept out of reach that they can chew on?
4. How many staff per dogs do they have at the Doggy Daycare? Is there someone with the dogs at ALL times? A good rule of thumb is 1 staff member to every 7 dogs.
5. How is the staff trained? Do they know what to do in case of a fight? What do they use as a deterrent to keep the dogs from getting to out of hand? Many places will use water bottles to cause a distraction and calm them down or even bitter apple to stop constant barking. Do they use "time out" crates? This is a good thing.
6. Do they separate large dogs from small dogs in the Daycare? Very important as to avoid a small dog getting stepped on or any bullying or intimidation from either the large or small dog. What do they do about dogs that are being bullied or are bullying?
7. Are there any toys allowed? Sometimes dogs can be toy aggressive and as nice as they are when toys are not around; their personality's can change with toys.
8. Do they have any nap times? It's good to have a period where the dogs can all settle down for a nap and not to get to over excited.
9. What happens if your dog gets hurt at the Doggy Daycare? Is there a Vet close by? Do they bring the dog to the Vet or will they call you first?
