The blue and gold I think is a female and is smaller than average. Max has a gental disposition and is very well mannered. The bird is 4 an has a nice vocabulary. It has an outside aviary and a big inside cage. I live in the south eastern part of the US so the climate is mild. I spend a lot of time with Max but I feel like another bird would help with the time I am at work and well I'm not as fun as a bird. I don't want to mate this bird. Whatever the type I will purchase a hand fed bird. It will have a seperate cage and share a big aviary.

I have 2 blue and golds. One is 24 years old that I got when he or she was 3, and the other an 11 year old female I have had for 6 years. They have separate cages, but are put out on a parrot tree together everyday. After 6 years, they tolerate each other and respect each others space on the perch, but nothing more. I have had 3 others, and they were pretty much the same....independent birds. I wouldn't consider mixing anything else other than another Macaw.
As strange is it sounds, the only other "bird friend" my 24 year old has ever had was a lovebird. It was an escape artist that would break out and go get in the Macaw cage and sit right next to the B and G on the perch! Darnest thing I have ever seen. Visitors would ask if the lovebird was the Macaw’s baby!
Someone mentioned that 2 Macaws are twice the work. I don't find that to be true at all. Sure you have another cage to clean, but that is only part of it. When preparing fruits and veggies, it’s no more trouble to prepare for 2 than it is 1.
Back to the original subject, don't expect a new Macaw to definitely bond with your first one, but you can get a great deal of enjoyment out of them being "acquaintances." Good luck and email me when you get your new one if you have any questions.
