The blood parrots are a fish made basically from a red devil cichlid by selecting for a genetic deformity that nearly all red devil breeders used to cull out of their fry early. So the blood parrots inherit the same color pattern of a red devil, which changes as they grow. so develop a brown body and black stripes. Others are mottled, or turn yellow, orange (where the name red evil comes from) or white.
The red and green colors are dyes the fish were submerged in. Some of the fish die during the process while the rest have shortened life spans and various health problems as a result of the chemical effects of the dye. As the fish grows and gets older the dye fades and the fish assumes closer to its natural color.
Methylene blue would not cause the problem. It is used to inhibit fungus and to interfere with the ability of the infective state of ick to reinfect fish in the aquarium.
Blood parrots often bully and eventually kill each other. You need a solid divider, or separate tanks for them. In a very large tank like a 280 gallon or larger, you can put in lots of blood parrots and there will be too many of them to create a pecking order, which is always fatal for those near the bottom. Plecostomus larger than the blood parrots can help divert some of this bad energy by gaining the attention of the meanest blood parrots. The pleco's armor keeps it fairly safe from attack.
