I have had birds in my hands many many times. I used to have a pair of cockatiels and they would LOVE to be held a LOT. I also pick up injured birds that I find in the woods and take care of them until they are healed enough to be released. Also, if one is very quiet and very still, one can put some thistle seed into your hand and just stand near a flock of goldfinches and purple finches and eventually one or two will actually land on that hand and begin to feed out of your hand. It is NOT a strange as you might imagine.
