Removing rust from wrought iron railing?
I have a metal railing thats in dire need of some TLC. I looked up some DIY procedures on how to properly remove rust and repaint the iron, but I feel it needs more than sanding or filing. I tried sanding with 80-grit sandpaper, but don't have enough manpower to get through all the way to the metal. Even the wire brush seems a bit weak. This is where I've hit a rut, because I need something stronger to sand away the rust and paint. I tried using these metal wire wheels, but they don't seem to work as well as my hand sanding. I've seen those grinding wheels, but I'm not sure they'll get around the curved areas of the railing.
I dunno, do you have any other recommendations or should I be persistent and put a little more elbow grease into it.
Go to your nearest hardware store and ask for Naval Jelly - it is a nice-smelling pink substance packaged in a plastic container that with one application with a brush will dissolve rust on any kind of metal in just 10 or 15 minutes. After you apply it, let it sit a while, then just hose off the jelly and rust - amazing!
