Since dirty and unmaintained bird cages can lead to serious health problems for both you and your bird, a proper care for the bird cage is an important task that needs to be done on a regular basis. It can be a daunting task for those of you who have recently acquired the feathered friends but here are few simple tips to keep them happy and clean for years to come.
There are certain cleaning processes that should be done on a daily basis. Think of it like brushing your teeth or washing dishes after every meal:
The cage liner should be cleaned daily to keep your bird from walking through food that's been strewn from the food bowl and droppings. This not only benefits the bird's health but it keeps you from having to smell the unpleasant odors in your home. Placing a newspaper at the bottom and along the bottom edge can make this a really easy process.
You never eat out of a dirty plate and so shouldn't your bird. The food and water bowl should be cleaned daily with a mild dish detergent to prevent any bacterial growth. Keep in mind when you're doing this to rinse the bowls thoroughly and are completely dried before you let your bird feed or drink out of it.
Make sure to keep the bird cage surfaces cleaned by using a damp rag or paper towel. Cleaning the surfaces of your cage not only means clean and sanitary environment for your bird it keeps your bird cage looking pristine and presentable. Don't try to cut corners either, wipe down everything from the bars, perches to any toys you might have in the cage. If you're having trouble scrubbing stubborn messes then try using bird-safe cage cleaners.
Now in addition to these daily cleaning, you should also be conducting weekly cleaning. Don't be overwhelmed though, unlike the daily cleaning routine, you can assign these chores to different days to make it more manageable.
The bottom tray that your cage liners are placed on should be cleaned at least once a week. Make sure you don't cut corners and really scrub hard with a damp rag and a cage cleaner. Like the food and water bowl, you want to make sure the bottom tray is rinsed and dried before placing it back.
If you own a bird cage with a grate at the bottom of the cage then you'd want to clean that on a weekly basis too. The grate usually suspends over the tray to let the droppings fall through to the bottom. Make sure to scrub off the dried droppings that may be on the grate.
Perches and toys should be soaked and scrubbed. These may take a while to dry so you may want to have extra perches for those unaccounted for situations. It's also a good idea to rotate the toys for your bird so that it won't get bored. Entertained bird is a happy bird.
I admit, it's a lot of work to keep the bird cage clean. But you should also remember that doing this keeps your bird happy and potentially add years to the quality time you and your bird would be spending together. With a proper planning you can get do this quickly and efficiently. Your bird will be ever so grateful for your hard work too.
