Single stage snowblower paddles are usually made of rubber or some type of hard plastic. The plastic wears tears width-wise from friction against the snow, ice or ground during use. Properly function paddles will make your snowblower feel nearly self-propelling. When the paddles are worn, you will have to use more strength to push the machine as the machine has less contact with the ground. This is an indication that your paddles are in need of replacement.
There are also two-stage snowblowers. Their paddles do not wear as quickly as single stage snowblower paddles. This is because the paddles are made of metal and are deeper in the machine. The metal paddles also do not contact the ground in two-stage units, which reduces wear.
Snowblower paddles should be checked several times during the season for and then after the season as well. Once the paddles have worn down more than ½ inch, it is a good idea to replace them. You may also be able to tell your paddles are in need of replacement when your machine is not throwing snow as far as it was previously.
To replace paddles, typically all that is required is the unfastening of a couple bolts from the auger and bars inside your snowblower. See your machine's owner's manual for instruction. Typically, all it requires is removal of the old paddles and then screw in the new paddles.
