It's an unmistakable scene from cinema, drilled into the collective memory of most Americans. Summertime on Cape Cod, the beaches teeming with vacationers soaking up the sun and going for swims. With all of the fuss and carrying on to celebrate Fourth of July, no one notices a fin in the water.
From that moment onward, sharks became a fascinating part of popular culture.
Cut to the 2000s, when the smash popularity of the Discovery Channel's Shark Week continues to go strong. 2009's edition was an incredible collection of programming that consisted of a re-broadcasting of old favorites with incredible new looks at these mysterious creatures. For viewers lucky enough to have satellite TV, Shark Week is a non-stop look into the mysterious of the ocean and one of its oldest residents. Programs researching the elusive great white shark by following it to faraway feeding grounds around the world go head to head with "Deadly Waters" and "Day of the Shark 2," which chronicle the most dangerous waters and times when sharks showed humans who was a tourist and who was a local in the ocean.
But wait. Don't cue up the Jaws theme song in your head quite yet. Shark Week isn't about sensationalizing sharks as mindless killing machines. Instead, a great deal of the shows that run as part of Shark Week actually inform the public about sharks (even if it's just to let you know to stay away from them!) "Air Jaws" follows researchers to a stretch of water off of Africa where great white sharks do incredible acrobatics, flipping and twisting their 20-feet long bodies out of the water and into the air while catching seals. In 2008, the team behind Mythbusters hosted, and disproved a number of shark-related myths. And "Sharkbite Summer" takes a critical look at why 2001 was sensationalized as one of the biggest years for shark attacks.
But what keeps viewers glued to their HD TVs for the duration of Shark Week aren't usually the overt historical programs. No, the ones that seem to attract the most viewers are those that simply explore one particular shark or another. "Bull Shark: The World's Deadliest Shark" and "Sharks in a Desert Sea" both drew huge audiences who couldn't wait to find out more mysteries of the deep. But the clear winner of all of Shark Week has been the hugely-successful "Air Jaws," which even spawned a sequel program, "Air Jaws II: Even Higher." With the breathtaking footage of these gigantic great white sharks jumping far out of the ocean, it's no wonder why the shows have been so popular. Both installments of "Air Jaws" were extremely difficult to shoot, requiring many high-definition cutting-edge video cameras and a patient crew not prone to seasickness.
This isn't just educational programming for the kids, either. Shark Week manages to keep grown-ups, teenagers, and even hip 20-somethings glued to their television sets for the duration of their week-long programming. The channel's always had an eye for the high-tech approach, too, whether it was handing out thousands of sets of 3-D glasses back in 2000 for one segment on gigantic ancient sharks, or tailoring certain programs, like "Air Jaws," to be shown in high-definition. And Twitter was aflutter the entire duration of Shark Week, with the phrase making it as a trending topic almost every day. The excitement amongst grown ups, it seems, was palpable.
